How Should a Good Athlete Be?

Sports should be a part of every stage of a person's life. Every individual needs to engage in sports, whether to stay healthy or to develop their body and look better. Sport becomes meaningful not only by performing physical movements but also by integrating it into every aspect of our lives and applying the ethics and philosophy of sports to it.

A good athlete should organize almost everything they do throughout the day according to the sport they engage in and the requirements of being an athlete. This is a fundamental principle to see the sufficient impact of the sport and to become a true athlete.

Nutrition is as important for an athlete as physical activity. An athlete who does not eat properly is considered to have wasted their efforts. The top priority for recovering from fatigue, maintaining the vitality of the body, ensuring muscle development, and thus staying healthy is a balanced nutrition plan. Adequate protein intake, consumption of energizing and healthy foods, and avoiding excessive fat, salt, and sugar are vital for an athlete. A good athlete should adopt these principles and apply them to the foods they consume; otherwise, they will not progress.

A consistent sleep schedule is considered a prerequisite for an athlete to continue their sport. After strenuous activities, the body needs rest to start the new day energetically. Failure to establish a sleep routine and not getting enough rest means that the athlete will not have enough energy for the sport the next day. A disciplined athlete should be aware that without a proper sleep and nutrition regimen, they cannot fully channel their strength into their sport.

Another requirement for being a good athlete is having sports ethics and discipline. Although an athlete may have physical superiority over others, this superiority should not be used in a disrespectful and discomforting manner towards others. In competitions, they should exhibit the same level of respect towards their opponents. They must discipline their lives according to their sport and live in a way that reflects respect. Those who do these things become good athletes, and being a good athlete also brings being a good person along with it.

HOW TO BE A GOOD SPORTS PARENT?

 • Encourage your child, regardless of their level of success and skills. • Leave coaching to the coach. • Avoid creating pressure on the child and discussing the game excessively. • Be realistic about your child's future in sports. • Avoid pressuring your child to win school scholarships, making wrong decisions about their future. • Boost your child's morale when they look at you during the game, allowing them to model positive behavior from you. • Nothing embarrasses a child more during the game than their parents shouting from the sidelines, arguing with the coach, referee, or others, and making negative comments. • Encourage your child to pursue their interests rather than doing what you want them to do.

KEY QUESTIONS PARENTS SHOULD ASK THEMSELVES

 • Have I directed my child to a suitable sports branch based on their abilities? • Do I have realistic expectations about my child? • How should I behave if I don't like the referee's decision? • Do I need to maintain control over my behavior? • How does my child feel about themselves during the game? • How should I behave when my child's team loses? • What is the role of sports in my child's life?
